Connecticut WCAA Chapter Members Join Creative Forces for the Interval House
Members of the Connecticut WCAA Chapter joined creative forces to install sheers and drapes in the bedroom windows of the Interval House, a safe house for women and children who are temporarily sheltered from domestic violence situations. There were several bedrooms and bathrooms with more than 30 windows needing light filtering sheers and room darkening upgrades, so this small chapter decided to change them all.
Many of the chapter’s window covering workrooms remove quality drapes and valances from their clients’ windows and instead of discarding them, the WCAA Connecticut Chapter members have altered them for this next home. Besides re-pleating clean and quality donated drapes, members made rod pocket sheers from a bolt donated from Angels. Hardware was donated from Porter Preston and installation was performed by the chapter’s energetic members.
The fourth install was July 3 when chapter members Laurel McGee, Heather Taylor and Ann Dakille worked together like a fine clock: one on her ladder putting in steel rods inside the windows for sheers, another was mounting traverse tracks with strong anchors, while the third was cutting rods and dressing the drapes. On this day they finished two large rooms consisting of eight windows, while laughing, sharing and breaking for well deserved navel oranges and water! The ladies felt honored to be a part of this project with their fellow colleagues of this very gratifying industry. Special thanks goes to Denise Levesque Kalkstein for making sheers and donating the gold drapes. There are only three more bedrooms to go and then the common room and staff offices are next!
Chapter members continue to be impressed with their clients’ generosity to pass on their window dressings. Their donation generates vital conversations about domestic violence. We all need to be graced with the comfort of warm surroundings, and the sewing industry is a big part of that subtle gift!
May the many guests of this precious place know they are worthy, valued and honored for choosing not to be abused anymore as they redirect their lives and change the generational effects on their children, apart from control, violence and fears from their intimate partners. It is the WCAA Connecticut Chapter’s honor to bless them with their skills and resources.
